6 ways to avoid scratching a fleabite

What to do if you just can’t help yourself…

Fleas can cause infection, anaemia, tapeworms and generally make everyone’s life a misery. Dog and cat fleas don’t live on humans but they do bite, causing irritating, itchy spots that only get worse if you scratch them. If you do get bitten, try distracting yourself with our unbeatable ways to avoid scratching a fleabite…

  1. Wear a pair of thick rubber kitchen gloves or stick plasters on the ends of your fingers. If you can’t touch it, you can’t scratch it.
  2. Zip yourself inside a chemical suit. Also good for stopping new flea bites (but probably less appropriate for the workplace).
  3. Go to a flea market and sift through bric-a-brac for a few hours. Just don’t come home with a ratty looking blanket or a sheepskin coat (it’s not called a flea market for nothing).
  4. Watch some good TV or a movie. But not Fleabag. Or The Seven Year Itch.
  5. Listen to some music. How about Peter Gabriel’s Scratch My Back? Or Glen Campbell’s Every Time I Itch I Wind Up Scratching You?
  6. Learn to recite Victorian mathematician Augustus De Morgan’s ditty: "Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em, and little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum. And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on, while these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on.” Recite until the itching stops, or until you feel worse about the ditty than you do about the bites.

Or you could just use a regular flea treatment to protect your pet & home in the first place…

Advantage is a preventative flea treatment that’s applied straight to your cat or dog’s skin from a pipette. It provides effective flea protection for up to 4 weeks by killing adult fleas through contact as well as killing larvae in the home wherever the pet goes. Use it on a regular basis and it’s unlikely you’ll ever need to wear a chemical suit or recite an annoying ditty again.
