Responsible Use of Medicines in Pets:

flea and tick products

Most cats and dogs will need treating for fleas and/or ticks at some point in their lives. When we use medicines for these parasites, it is very important that they are used responsibly. Flea and tick products may be obtained from your vet, from a pet supply store, a pharmacy or online. Some are only available with a prescription from a vet. Wherever they come from, the principles of responsible use are the same:

  • Always follow the directions carefully. There may be instructions on the packaging, an additional label or inside the pack. Sometimes there may be a weblink or QR code to use for additional information. Read the instructions every time you use it to refresh your knowledge. Even if you have bought the product before, information can change.
  • These instructions will also include method of application (e.g. is it a “spot-on”, a collar or a tablet).
  • For spot-ons, sprays and collars there may be instructions on when your pet can next swim or be bathed. It's important to follow the instructions to make sure the product works properly and does not affect the environment.
  • Some tablets must be given with food to work properly, others on an empty stomach. Always check the instructions.
  • There may be information on precautions to be taken by the person using the product and the people the pet lives with. For example, you may need to wear gloves or keep the treated animal away from other pets or children for a period of time.
  • Check what the instructions say about how frequently the product should be used e.g. every 4 weeks, every month, every 3 months.
  • If the medicine doesn’t seem to be working, or you are worried that your pet may have had an adverse reaction, speak to your vet or the place where you bought the medicine

Correct use of flea and tick products helps to protect our pets, the people they live with and our environment.
