
Diagnosing and treating arthritis in dogs
If your dog is diagnosed with arthritis, also known as osteoarthritis (OA), your vet will advise you on the most suitable care plan. This will be tailored specifically to your dog and their individual needs, depending on their stage of arthritis. Arthritis treatment focuses on pain relief, preserving joint function, and improving quality of life, and may include:1
Veterinary supportPain relief: medication may be prescribed to help control and/or reduce pain and inflammation
Rehabilitation: hydrotherapy or manual therapy
Weight management and exerciseDietary changes and weight loss may be required to reduce strain on joints
Controlled exercise (e.g., leash walking and swimming) can maintain joint mobility while reducing impact
Lifestyle changesComfortable bedding: memory foam and adequate space to sleep can keep your dogs more comfortable
Home adaptations: raising dog bowls, ramps for stair/car access, non-slip flooring can provide support

Breaking the cycle of pain with osteoarthritis
Managing and treating arthritis aims to help break the cycle of pain for your dog.
By reducing pain caused by arthritis, your dog will be able to stay more active. This will help your dog lose weight, which in turn puts less stress on their joints.
Less joint stress reduces pain, breaking the cycle and improving your dog’s quality of life.6

When to take your dog to the vet if you suspect arthritis

If you notice any changes to your dog’s usual behaviour (e.g., limping, pain when moving, slowing down/stiffness)

If you see differences in activities they typically enjoy (e.g., walking, climbing, jumping)

If your dog shows difficulty sitting/lying down
Early diagnosis and treatment can help slow down the progression of oarthritis and improve your dog’s quality of life.2
